Today in 2004 Outkast created history at Grammys

Most celebrated hip-hop duo of all time Outkast which includes rappers Andre 3000 and Big Boi, achievements throughout their career will take many paragraphs to compile. As today the atlanta based group celebrates it’s 17th anniversary of achieving a rare feat in history of coveted GRAMMYS Awards.

On 8th February 2004 ,Outkast’s fourth studio album “Speakerboxxx/The Love Below” became the first rap album to ever win Album Of The Year at 46th Annual GRAMMYs Awards. Outkast achievement is not repeated by any rap album to this day in Grammys ,that explains how important win it was for a still young genre.

Speakerboxxx/The Love Below was a 2 hour long double disc album which is distributed over solo albums from both of group’s rappers. Over the course of two years 120 songs were recorded at 4 different studios with 39 making it onto the final album. Explaining the theme behind the album Big Boi told XXL in 2003,

the idea was just to keep it funky, keep it jamming, it’s always bass-heavy. And lyricism, it’s all about lyrics
