Last month Vic Mensa released the lead single off the album “Shelter” featuring Wyclef Jean and Chance The Rapper and also delivered a powerful Performance of the song in Stephen Colbert’s Late Show.

Vic described the inspiration behind “Shelter”

I got a DM from a woman who told me she was a fan of my music and introduced me to a man named Julius Jones who is on death row in Oklahoma. She told me he had been signing his outgoing letters with “Theme Music We Could Be Free by VIC MENSA”. I got chills down my spine, and shortly after was inspired to write the verses for “SHELTER”.

The Fugees member Wyclef Jean himself gave props to Vic

Vic Mensa is a modern day Wyclef, in the sense of not being afraid to tackle the hard issues. He stands for his people. It was important to show my love and support for who he is and what he stands for.”
