Nicki Minaj Talks about “Seeing Green,” featuring Drake and Lil Wayne
During the interview, Nicki recalled her collaboration with Drake and Lil Wayne on “Seeing Green.” The song was released back in 2009. One of the hosts asked if it felt like a competition making this track with Drizzy and Wayne to which the Pink Friday creator responded:
“Yes, I think we are always competing. I think Drake and Wayne and myself I think we are very freaking competitive and I think that’s what makes it fun.”
Nicki also admitted that she didn’t always feel as confident and Weezy was the one who helped her figure out how the hip-hop industry works:
“I remember one time when I was kind of like losing my way, some years back, Lil Wayne was like, ‘Yo, you need to be in the studio. You need to be around rappers,” she said, adding: “I would imagine that when a basketball player that’s great plays on the court with other great people, it just makes it that much better. That feeling of like ‘Yo, I’m competing with the best so I’m gonna go super-duper hard because I know that if I make a mistake on anything it’s gonna be another person that’s thinking just like me, going just as hard, that’s gonna eat my f*cking food!”
Nicki Talks about why “New Body” never got released
Towards the end of the interview, Nicki discussed her collaboration with Kanye West, which was never released. The two rappers’ collaboration “New Body” was widely anticipated. Kanye hyped the song a lot in 2019, but when his album Yandhi was canceled, the feature went with it. Later, Nicki acknowledged that they didn’t “see eye-to-eye” on matters, but fans never received a full explanation as to why the single was scrapped.
“Let me tell you something about that,” said Nicki, “I respect everybody, and where they are in life, and where they are spiritually, but you know what I though was funny, what I got a kick out recently, that the public adored ‘New Body’, like, ‘New Body’ was the biggest hit record that never came out.”
She also revealed that Ye made her write her verse four times for that song:
“Kanye made me write my ‘New Body’ verse four times over in order to fit into were he was creatively and spiritually in his life. Only to then I go on the internet a few month later to see him on Drink Champs, you know what I’m saying, rolling a blunt, smoking, I don’t know what he was doing.”
Implying that Kanye changed his direction that he was taking when he replaced his album Yandhi with the gospel album Jesus Is King, “I missed it by a year I guess,” she added, “Had ‘New Body’ been out when he was not in his gospel era, then it would have seen the light of day. But, it didn’t, so it was not meant to be. But yes, everybody knows that was the hit that got away.”
She also explained that there is no hope left for that track to be released, saying:
“I think the ship has sailed for ‘New Body,’ everybody has come to love the original way they heard it. So I’ll just let everybody have that in their hearts.”
Despite her disappointment that the song was never released, Nicki insisted that there is no bad blood between her and Ye. “Sometimes stuff happens like that in rap, in our world. You can’t predict how things are gonna be presented to the world so it is what it is,” she said.
