Thundercat has unveiled his latest single and accompanying video, ‘She Knows Too Much’, a newly restored track featuring his close friend and longtime collaborator, the late Mac Miller.
The song appears on Thundercat’s upcoming fifth studio album, ‘Distracted’, due out April 3rd via Brainfeeder. With the blessing of the Mac Miller Estate, Thundercat was able to complete the track, which had originally been started several years before Miller’s passing.
Produced alongside acclaimed hitmaker Greg Kurstin, ‘She Knows Too Much’ blends bright, funk-driven energy with polished pop sensibilities, highlighting the natural creative chemistry the two artists shared.
“I’m grateful to have spent my time on this planet with Mac,” Thundercat shares. “What an artist, what a spirit, what a joy to have experienced.”
The single was selected as BBC Radio 1’s Hottest Record and arrives with an animated music video directed by Léa Esmaili and produced by Blinkink.
Léa Esmaili shared her thoughts behind the creative process: “First of all, making this music video is a huge honor, as I grew up with these two artists and have admired their universe since I was a teenager. I wanted to create, within a single video, a fun animated moment by mixing styles either it’s 2D animation or 3D. Beyond that, I wanted to build a burlesque narrative around two friends who spend a completely crazy day together, tied to their friendship and to anime of this kind.“
‘Distracted’ marks Thundercat’s first full-length release in six years, following his Grammy-winning album It Is What It Is. The new record also includes previously released tracks such as ‘I Did This To Myself’ featuring Lil Yachty and Flying Lotus, as well as ‘No More Lies’ with Tame Impala.
True to his signature offbeat style, the album leans into psychedelic textures and playful experimentation while being his most approachable project to date. Balancing humor and pop appeal with deeper reflections shaped by a period of creative stagnation, Thundercat ultimately hopes listeners will take a simple message from the record: “Just enjoy it and have fun and just know that the struggle is real and changes shape, but just to keep pushing forward.”
